The core functionality within SORCE can be split into four areas:
- Content Management and Administration
- Security and Authentication
- Searching
- Integration
Each of these features work behind the scenes to help deliver accurate information to your employees.
Content Management and Administration
The management of your content is a key functionality within SORCE. Content can be managed both centrally, using an administrator, and de-centrally using content contributors. All management is done through your browser and does not require any third party software or plug-ins.
Administrators control the overall site functionality, this includes:
- The navigation structure
- Permissions and security
- Integration into your existing enterprise software
- Homepage layouts
- System wide branding and graphics
- Monitoring and recording site statistics
Content contributors control content that is more local to them. This may include:
- Department news and content
- Department branding
- Department homepages
This structure encourages ownership of content by the business whilst maintaining control of consistency, security and site structure. The management of your content is separate to the workflow of your applications. Applications such as holidays, sickness and expenses contain workflow allowing line managers, team leaders or individuals responsible to approve or reject a submission. These applications process content automatically, without the need for a content contributor or administrator to be involved.
Security and Authentication
SORCE provides a comprehensive and robust security model, using both a login process and user authentication.
Every individual is required to login to the system. Depending on your deployment this can be achieved in three ways:
- Password protected login
(Username + Password) - Internet banking style three tier authentication
(Username + Password + Memorable Word) - Integration with Microsoft’s ActiveDirectory or Novell’s eDirectory
(Automatic Login Integrated Authentication)
For extranet users, or organisations that require a higher level of security and data encryption, SORCE can be provided with 128 bit SSL encryption.
When individuals gain access, the SORCE access control regulates what your users can see. For individuals, this means that they have access to everything related to their job or project, without unnecessary clutter. From a security perspective, this ensures that access to sensitive documents or content is controlled.
Searching
SORCE contains its own built in search tools that provide a range of features allowing individuals to customise their search to all parts of their intranet, extranet or portal environment.
High speed retrieval of information stored within SORCE is achieved in two ways; first by indexing and tagging content, then with the use of powerful search functionality.
As documents are added it is automatically indexed by SORCE to help deliver quicker, more accurate search results. This applies to all content including the information within PDF’s and a huge range of document and file types. Content can also be manually tagged using SORCE knowledge tags. These tags improve search results by linking your content to common phrases that may be used within your organisation.
Every application within SORCE also has its own specific search facilities. Many of the ready-made applications, such as document management, include additional search options such as full body text searching within documents and pdfs. The advanced search helps drill down to the content you require allowing searches to be made on the published date range, author or file type. Users may also choose which applications are searched and save these searches for future use.
Integration
SORCE includes the capability to integrate with existing IT systems. Integration with systems such as Finance, HR or Sales can be used to display information about budgets, Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s), business intelligence or to deliver reports to selected individuals or teams.
Other ‘enterprise wide’ ERP, EPOS systems can be integrated with SORCE to distribute the information these systems hold. This allows you to automatically distribute information from a variety of data sources to the appropriate recipients via your centralised intranet.
